Bench & Table saws for cutting

Table saw, Mitre saw or bench saws as they are commonly called, are small, fixed saws that fit comfortably on a work bench or table top. They are primarily used for cutting wood but can be used for cutting metal and concrete if the correct blade is fit and the bench saw is designed to cut concrete. Because of their small size, table saws are perfect for small diy jobs and also the perfect choice for the professional trades person. Unlike other cutting saws, a bench saw can cut very precisely because of their solid fixed position. Most quality mitre, table and bench saws also have an acurate measuring aid in centimeters on the bottom plate along the cutting line. These kinds of saws are ideal for cutting materials at an angle. They are usually powered with electricity and can easily be carried by one person.

How to Use a Bench, Mitre or Table Saw

Always follow manufactures instructions before you begin to use a new Bench, Table or Mitre saw

  1. Always make sure you have followed all the safety instructions before you begin to cut the material.
  2. Accuratly mark along the cutting line with a pencil, chalk , pen or whatever you use to mark the cutting line with. Make sure that the line mark will not be removed by the draft of the saw blade once the cutting begins.
  3. If your saw has a back plate, (This is a solid, vertical piece of metal plate that you rest your material against whilst you cut the item.) rest the material against the back plate and put slight pressure on the material to hold in place.
  4. Line up the marked cutting line with the markes indicated on the bottom plate.
  5. Gently, but firmly, holding the bench saw handle lower the blade onto the cutting line all the while checking to make sure that the blade is going to cut along the marked line.
  6. Once you are confident that the bench saw blade is lined up with the mark begin to cut. Try to cut in a slow, even motion, letting the saw blade do the cutting by gently pushing the handle until the material is sawn all the way through. You must also be aware that the "off cut", that is the piece of material that is not held in position on the bench saw will fall once the material has been cut. If the material you are cutting is delicate or the cut off piece of material is needed to be saved , then you may have to support the cut off side of material to avoid it falling on the floor and getting damaged.
  7. Lift up on the handle of the bench saw until it rests and then turn off the machine.
  8. Inspect your material to ensure the correct cut has been achieved.
